Save A Dollar

I went to the grocery store today and bought eggs, crackers, sausage, whipped topping,  frozen pizzas, and a fountain drink.   I didn’t have any coupons, but I was feeling good because everything I bought was marked down–except for the drink..which is already a good value at 22oz for $.79.

As I gathered my things to leave the store, I paused to review the receipt.   I had wondered about the advertised special of 2 boxes of saltines for $4.  Did the cashier charge me $2 for the one box I purchased or did I pay the regular price?   Hmmmm.   The receipt said I paid $2.99, so I asked if it was because I didn’t buy 2 boxes.   No,  they were $2.   The scanner didn’t read the sale price.  The cashier rang up a $.99 refund.  I saved a dollar (almost).

Now, you might think that’s too much trouble.  But I believe the scanner has this problem more often than you think.   And we’re paying for it.  I recently read an article written by Stephanie Nelson entitled “Get Free Groceries Every Week” in which she said, “On a recent trip I had $6.19 in overcharges on my receipt, which was 15% of the total amount.”    Wow.  That’s disturbing.   I wonder how many overcharges I have had over the years.

If you want to save a dollar (or more) watch the screen as your purchases are scanned, and don’t leave the store without a quick review of the receipt.  It just makes sense (cents) to do it, don’t you think?   After all, those dollars aren’t that easy to come by, and they do add up.
